Pak Sung-Hyok emerged as a surprise inclusion when he was named in Korea DPR's final squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ in preference to some of the Chollima’s established stars.

Pak, who turned 20 this May, remains a relatively unknown quantity even to those who have followed Korea DPR closely over recent years, with the youngster boasting precious little international experience. He missed out on the Chollima’s qualifying campaign for South Africa 2010 and was also conspicuous by his absence from the national B team which won February's AFC Challenge Cup.


Yet despite this lack of international pedigree, Pak’s distinctive talents have earned him a place in his country’s 23-man squad. Physically strong and blessed with tremendous pace, Pak is normally deployed as a defensive midfielder for his club Sobaeksu. An effective tackler who knits together play efficiently, he is also known for his excellent vision and is capable of providing lethal passes.

Pak’s talents have also caught the eye beyond his native Korea DPR, with Chengdu Blades in neighbouring China offering the youngster a trial just two years ago. A permanent move to didn’t materialise, but Pal left with glowing appraisals from the Chinese Super League’s coaching staff, and a bright future is expected.
