Dunga keen to cut Kaka cautions

Dunga keen to cut Kaka cautions

Brazil coach Dunga plans to speak to Kaka over the coming days in a bid to help the playmaker stop picking up needless yellow cards.

The Real Madrid midfielder collected his third caution of the FIFA World Cup™ - after two in the 3-1 group win over Cote d'Ivoire - for a trip on Arturo Vidal during his country's 3-0 second-round win over Chile last night. It took some of the gloss off his return from suspension in a match that saw the five-time champions march into the quarter-finals thanks to goals from Juan, Luis Fabiano and Robinho.

Dunga said: "It is a problem - I don't want Kaka to be out suspended. It looks as though the technical players are punished and those who commit fouls aren't always. This started happening in the group phase and we are going to talk about this with Kaka. It is a concern for him but we don't want to get bogged down with the issue."

Dunga predicts championship match

Dunga predicts championship match

Brazil coach Dunga is expecting a real "championship match" when his side tussle with Chile in their South American derby at the FIFA World Cup tonight. The Selecao have enjoyed plenty of success against their opponents over the years with their 65 meetings yielding 46 wins for the five-time world champions, while their rivals have come out on top just seven times.

With the latest winning sequence dating back nearly 10 years, Dunga believes there is plenty of motivation for their opponents to try to change the record. "I think that the motivation of any sportsman is to actually try to breach a pattern," he said. "We cannot spend our time comparing ourselves with our opponents. We have to try and improve as much as possible and that is exactly what Chile will do."

Brazil finish top, Portugal do enough

Before a ball had been kicked, Group G was considered to be the toughest section at 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, with three candidates likely to vie for the two qualifying places. But in the end, the Lusophone countries won the day, as an unbeaten Brazil topped the group and Portugal took second spot without conceding a goal.

Côte d’Ivoire lived up to expectations, but their haul of four points in three games meant that they missed out on the second qualification place. Only Korea DPR bowed out without opening their account, as their three matches brought no points and 12 goals conceded, the only highlight being their goal against the Brazilians.

Brazil may have already qualified for the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup™, but Kaka has warned Portugal to still expect a battle when the two sides meet on Friday.

Kaka is suspended for the game after being sent off in his team's 3-1 triumph over Côte d'Ivoire. The South Americans lead Group G, two points clear of second-place Portugal, who need a win to guarantee the top spot in the pool.

"Brazil will go out to win," said Kaka. "This final group game is important for us to finish first. A draw would also be good but a win would give us the strength to go into the knock-out round really motivated."

Manchester City fans might not believe it, but Robinho is the toast of the Brazilian FIFA World Cup™ squad. With Kaka not firing on all cylinders after a difficult season at Real Madrid, Robinho has looked more like being key to Brazil's hopes of lifting a sixth world title.

Luis Fabiano set to follow in Ronaldo's footsteps

Luis Fabiano set to follow in Ronaldo's footsteps

He has something to live up, replacing Ronaldo, the "Phenomenon" who fired Brazil to glory in 2002 and broke Gerd Mueller's all-time FIFA World Cup™ scoring haul of 14 goals in Germany last time out. But Luis Fabiano isn't letting the burden of shooting the Selecao to their sixth title weigh too heavily on his shoulders as he seeks his own place in the pantheon of all-time greats to have worn the canary yellow shirt.

Coach 2010 - Brazil

  • Name: DUNGA
  • Country: Brazil
  • Date of Birth: 31 October 1963
When Carlos Alberto Parreira vacated the Brazilian hot-seat following the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, few expected the CBF to hand the reins to Dunga. After all, he had no experience in coaching.

However, the former midfield enforcer had shown his leadership qualities during his playing career, as a vociferous, inspirational captain who guided A Seleção to 1994 FIFA World Cup USA™ glory. An atypically Brazilian player, Dunga compensated for a lack of flair with fierce tackling and impressive ball retention, and made 91 appearances for his country between 1987 and 1998.

It became immediately apparent that Dunga was not going to pick players based on their reputations and he bravely dropped a number of Brazil's revered superstars.

Dunga went unbeaten during his first six matches at the helm of A Seleção, including a morale-boosting 3-0 win over rivals Argentina, before his team fell to Portugal 0-2 in February 2007. The head coach’s first big test came at the Copa America 2007 in Venezuela, where after opening up with a loss to Mexico, they charged to the final and again overcame Argentina 3-0.

Brazil had their share of problems at times during South Africa 2010 qualifying, as three straight 0-0 draws at home put pressure on Dunga’s broad shoulders. But the former world champion soon proved his worth in emphatic fashion, leading the Canarinho to an unbeaten FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 title in South Africa and finishing the South American qualifiers in first place with a handful of fine displays, particularly the away wins against Uruguay (4-0) and Argentina (3-1).

Brazil national football team - Profile

Profile

It almost goes without saying that Brazil, the five-times world champions, go into every FIFA World Cup™ heavily favoured to add yet another star to the legendary Amarelinha shirt. Having played for A Seleção at three editions of the global showpiece, coach Dunga will be fully aware that any outcome other than a sixth world crown will likely be considered a failure.
The road to South Africa
The fans' at times vitriolic reaction to Brazil's results and performances particularly early on in the qualifying phase illustrates just how demanding they can be. Despite ending the preliminary event on top of the standings, after recording nine wins, seven draws and two defeats, and having clinched a South Africa 2010 berth with three matchdays to spare, the Auriverde camp had been subjected to a torrent of abuse after successive goalless home draws against Argentina, Bolivia and Colombia. Dunga's charges really hit their stride from April 2009, however, racking up five wins in a row including two landmark away results: a 4-0 humbling of Uruguay in Montevideo and a 3-1 defeat of arch-rivals Argentina in Rosario. It was the latter which confirmed their passage to South Africa.

The star players

Picking just a few names from a country so prolific at producing footballing talent is no easy task, though 2009 did underline the importance of certain key players. Starting between the sticks and we have keeper Julio Cesar, whose safe hands are a vital feature of A Seleção's miserly defence. The triumphant FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009 campaign cemented Kaka's place as the man Brazil look to for inspiration, a fact reflected in him taking the adidas Golden ball. Meanwhile up front, Luis Fabiano proved himself a truly world-class finisher with five goals including a priceless brace in the 3-2 final win over the USA.

The coach
Upon taking the job in August 2006, Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri, better known as Dunga, had already experienced the full gambit of emotions that come with playing for Brazil. Indeed, having been among the scapegoats targeted after the disappointment at Italy 1990, the powerful midfielder skippered Brazil to victory four years later in the USA. Despite the Brazilian national team position being his first coaching role, Dunga answered those who doubted his credentials by guiding A Canarinha to triumph in the 2007 Copa America, the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and qualifying the team for South Africa 2010 with room to spare.

Records

- Brazil are preparing to contest their 19th consecutive FIFA World Cup finals. They are the only country to have taken part in every edition of the global showpiece.
- They are also the only country to have won the title five times: amassing a total of 64 victories, 14 draws and 14 defeats in 92 games played.
- Between 15 June 2008 and 11 October 2009, A Seleção went 19 games unbeaten.

What they said

"We have to learn to live with the favourites' tag. We mustn't let it turn into something negative, as it has done in previous years." Kaka, following the win over Argentina which clinched qualification.

Brazil national football team

The Brazil national football team represents Brazil in international football and is controlled by the Brazilian Football Confederation. They are the most successful national football team in the history of the World Cup, with five championships (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002). A common quip about football is: "The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it."[5] Currently ranked first by FIFA, Brazil is consistently among the strongest football nations by Elo Ratings and is the only team to have played in every World Cup.
