89 individual scorers have found the net at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, not including the three who have scored own goals at South Africa 2010.


60 years had elapsed since Brazil last lost a FIFA World Cup game in the southern hemisphere. That came in the tournament they staged in 1950, when Uruguay beat them 2-1 in a memorable Final that went down in history as the Maracanazo.



36 years have passed since a Netherlands player last scored a winning goal against Brazil in the FIFA World Cup. It came in a second-round group fixture, when Johan Cryuff added to Johan Neeskens' earlier goal to give the Dutch a 2-0 victory in Dortmund in the 1974 edition.


25 matches had been played by the Netherlands with Bert Marwijk in charge before today, and central defender Joris Mathijsen had played in every one of them. The sequence came to an end when injury forced the Hamburg defender to pull out of the game with Brazil just before the start. Only Dirk Kuyt had also played in all 25 games under Van Marwijk, and the Liverpool striker added appearance number 26 as the Dutch claimed a memorable triumph.


20 years have passed since Brazil were last denied a semi-final place in the FIFA World Cup in successive editions. In 2006 they lost to France in the quarter-finals, while in 1990 they lost to Argentina in the Round of 16 having exited at the quarter-final stage four years earlier after defeat by France in a penalty shoot-out.

3 teams have recorded more than one victory over Brazil at the FIFA World Cup. France have beaten the South American giants three times, while Italy have two victories to their name, as do the Netherlands after today's triumph.


2 teams have not been behind in this tournament: Argentina and Paraguay. At the start of today, there were five teams sharing that honour but the Netherlands, Brazil and Uruguay were forced to try and retrieve deficits in today's quarter-finals.


1 goal has been conceded by the Netherlands from open play in this tournament, the goal with which Brazil took the lead in Port Elizabeth today. Their other two goals against had come from the penalty spot, scored by Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o and Robert Vittek of Slovakia.


1 own goal has been conceded by Brazil in their total of 97 FIFA World Cup matches. Felipe Melo unwillingly created a litle bit of history when he headed into his own net in the 53rd minute in Port Elizabeth to bring the Netherlands level.
